National Palace of Ajuda
In the first half of the 18th century, King John V planned to
build a summer residence in the Ajuda hill. The
building of this Royal Palace in this place, however, would take
place only after the Earthquake of 1755 which destroyed the
royal
residence, Paço da Ribeira (Ribeira Palace), at the Terreiro do Paço
(Palace Public Square). On King José I's initiative, the Royal
Palace of Ajuda was built on the grounds acquired by his father
firstly as a wooden building - commonly known as the Real Barraca (the
Royal Hut) which burned to the ground in 1794 - and then as the
Palace as it is nowadays.

National Museum of Coaches and Carriages
The National Coach Museum is located in the Belém district of Lisbon, in Portugal. The museum has one of the finest collections of historical carriages in the world, being one of the most visited museums of the city.
The museum is housed in the old Horse Riding Arena of the
Belém Palace, formerly a Royal Palace which is now the official
residence of the President of Portugal. The Horse Riding Area was
built after
1787 following the Neoclassical design of Italian
architect Giacomo Azzolini. Several Portuguese artists decorated the
interior of the building with paintings and tile (azulejo)
panels. The inner arena is 50 m long and 17 m wide, and was used for
training horses and for horse riding exhibitions and games, which
could be watched from its balconies by the Portuguese royal family.
The museum was created in 1905 by Queen Amélia to house an extensive collection of carriages belonging to the Portuguese royal family and nobility. The collection gives a full picture of the development of carriages from the late 16th through the 19th centuries, with carriages made in Italy, Portugal, France, Spain, Austria and England. Among its rarest items is a late 16th/early 17th-century travelling coach used by King Philip II of Portugal to come from Spain to Portugal in 1619. There are also several pompous Baroque 18th century carriages decorated with paintings and exuberant gilt woodwork, the most impressive of these being a ceremonial coach given by Pope Clement XI to King John V in 1715, and the two coaches of the Portuguese ambassador to Pope Clement XI, built in Rome in 1716.

Portuguese Maritime Museum
Different kinds of boats, royal barges, ship models, and maritime instruments and charts. The Bergantim Real, a sumptuous state barge built in Lisboa in 1778, and the hydro-plane used by Portuguese aviators Sacadura Cabral and Gago Coutinho in 1922 to cross the Southern Atlantic for the first time.
The Naval Museum, founded by King Luís on June 22nd, 1863 is at
present situated next to the Monastery of Jerónimos in Lisbon (Belem).
It was housed for a time in the former Naval School and the Palace
of the Count of Farrobo before making the symbolic transfer to
Belém, for it was from Belém, not far from the chapel of Our Lady of
Belém, that Vasco da Gama set sail for India, so when the museum was
moved to this site an "old dream of the Navy" was fulfilled.
Starting with some models of Portuguese Royal Navy vessels, items
began to be collected for the Naval Museum during the 18th century.
Today, over a century later, the collection has grown to over 16.000
items, not counting the photographic and other archives that contain
plans and drawings of ships. There is an extensive collection of
craft, as well as naval artillery and nautical instruments showing
important events in the history of the Portuguese navy, not only in the golden age of
Portuguese navigation, but also in the centuries which followed.

Carmo Archaeological Museum
The Carmo Convent and its Church were built between 1389 and 1423 in the plain Gothic style typical for the mendicant religious orders. There are also influences from the Monastery of Batalha , which had been founded by King John I and was being built at that same time. Compared to the other Gothic churches of the city, the Carmo Church was said to be the most imposing in its architecture and decoration.
The nave and apse of the Carmo Church are the setting for a small archaeological museum, with pieces from all periods of Portuguese history. The nave has a series of tombs, fountains, windows and other architectural relics from different places and styles. The old apse chapels are also used as exhibition rooms. One of them houses notable pre-historical objects excavated from a fortification near Azambuja (3500 - 1500 BC).
The group of Gothic tombs include that of Fernão Sanches, a bastard son of King Dinis I, (early 14th century), decorated with scenes of boar hunting, as well as the magnificent tomb of King Ferdinand I (reign 1367-1383), transferred to the museum from the Franciscan Convent of Santarém. Other notable exhibits include a statue of a 12th century king (perhaps Afonso Henriques), Spanish-Moorish azulejos and objects from the Roman and Visigoth periods.

Chiado Museum - National Museum of Modern Art
A recent museum. Most significant Romantic, naturalistic,
modernist, surrealist and abstractionist Portuguese artists from
1850 to 1960. Located right in the heart of Lisboa, in the Chiado
zone, the Museu Nacional de Arte Contemporânea was founded in1911,
installed in the old Convento de So Francisco. At the start of the
1990s, the building was completely remodeled, reopening in 1994 with
the new name Museu do Chiado.

The exposition starts by showing us references from the surrealism of the end of the 1950s, with drawings from sculptor Jorge Vieira and photographs from Fernando Lemos. It then takes us to the 1960s, tracing the design and painting of the post-surrealists like Marcelino Vespeira, the abstract geometric canvases of Joaquim Rodrigo, the nouveaux realism of the work of Lourdes Castro, the machines in movement of Ren Bertholo, the silhouettes and symmetries of José Escada, the torn canvases of João Pinheiro, until we reach the unexpected surfaces created by Pires Vieira.
The next room, dedicated to the 1970s, shows two essential Portuguese artists: Helena Almeida, with her skillful photographs/paintings, and Alberto Carneiro, with two installations that explore the themes of perception and representation of the exterior world.
From the 1970s we jump right to the 1990s, a core constituted of contemporary art that the museum has commissioned. Here we find the work of Miguel Palma, Ângela Ferreira, João Tabarra, João Onofre and João Penalva - one of the Portuguese artists of the moment with great international interest.
